24 Australians from the New South Wales state have been arrested since November for intentionally starting fires during this season as the world watches Australia suffer from record-large fire scorch the country’s land, people, and animals.
With these 24 being arrested for intentional fires, a total of 183 people are facing legal action in the same state. 53 people are facing consequences for not abiding by the state’s fire ban while another 47 are facing issues because they have discarded a lit cigarette or match on land. Starting a bushfire intentionally and being reckless and causing its spread can lead someone to 21 years in prison, according to authorities.
People might not think of the consequences of doing these types of things, considering maybe discarding a match or cigarette may seem trivial, but the country is in flames, seeing devastating damage. “24 people have been killed and over 2,000 homes have been destroyed by the bushfires,” said Scott Morrison, Australian Prime Minister. On top of that, over 12 million acres of land have been burned since the start. Also, it is estimated 480 million animals have died in New South Wales alone.
