The 2018 AMAs opened in beautiful vibrant reds as Taylor Swift took to the stage with her performers and the song “I Did Something Bad” featuring an entrancing, intimidating, extravagant cobra. Following her performance, Swift made sure to push awareness to vote which skyrocketed voting amounts. The stunning onyx glitter bodysuit Taylor wore sparkled under the lights, as did the outfit worn by Tracee Ellis Ross, the AMAs host who went into a humorous yet wonderful performance to multiple compilation songs from Cardi B and more.
The first award of the night went to Cardi B for Hip Hop Artist of The Year. Cardi gave a unique speech to show her perseverance through the negativity given to her, her past, and her music. Alongside her unique speech of many thanks, she had an equally as distinct dress with colorful flowers decorating it. Not only this, but Cardi made her TV debut with her live performance of “I Like It’” with Bad Bunny, and J Balvin, complete with fireworks, bright costumes, and beautiful decor in wild colors, certainly matching her expressive and colorful personality.
Mariah Carey had a dress almost as unique as Cardi’s which flowed across the stage in a stunning pink, and then there were the surrounding men. That’s right: men. Multiple half-dressed and dark makeup-wearing men danced around Carey’s pink dress.
Following a later performance, fans yelled in sync with singer Tyler Joseph of Twenty-One Pilots during their performance of “Jumpsuit” with a car on fire behind them, and gold glitter flickering down above them.
As for awards, Pop Rock Male Artist award nominees were Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, and Drake, but the award can only go to one person, and that was Post Malone, and this was his first AMA. Post Malone wasn’t the only one to get their first AMA tonight, Camila Cabello won her first AMA as a solo artist and thanked her many fans for their belief in her and the strength they gave her to keep going. The Tour of the year award went to Taylor Swift and she gave thanks to her tourmates of 360 people. And although not present during the award show due to being on their world ‘Love Yourself’ tour, hit sensation band BTS won Social Artist of the Year, and a select few other awards.
Some honoring tributes and speeches were made later in the night, with love to Aretha Franklin, the ‘Queen of Soul’ and Panic! At The Disco’s spectacular performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in tribute to the band Queen.
