Best Skiing Spots in Pennsylvania

Kirsten Serrone, Senior

January means ski season is in play, and it is a very popular sport, but not everyone can make it to other states such as Colorado. However, they still want an amazing and luxurious experience without having enormous travel expenses. In Pennsylvania, there are some pretty great ski resorts around that are beautiful, fun, and a good way to relax and disconnect.

To start, the first resort that any avid skier should visit is Laurel Mountain Ski Resort, in Laurel Mountain State Park. It has one of the highest vertical drops, at 761 feet. Laurel Mountain Resort is famous for its double diamond Lower Wildcat Slope, which has an average of a 60 percent slope and is the steepest in the state. It was designed by European ski legend Johann “Hannes” Schneider, an Austrain ski guide and inventor of Arlberg Method, the basics of alpine ski technique.

Next, there is Bear Creek Mountain Resort, which is local and easily accessible for many. It has 330 acres in the scenic Lehigh Valley of which 86  are skiable terrain. Bear Creek has three separate terrain parks, a slope side hotel, and a spa offering apres-ski relaxation, along with on-site daycare. It is a great option for skiers from Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Washington D.C., as it is only a few hours drive. It is a great place to go whether you’re a pro at skiing or still new, as it is a nearby resort with many different trail options suiting everyone.

Another fantastic option is Blue Knob All Seasons Resort located in Claysburg PA. It has 34 trails, six lifts, and the highest skiable mountain and the most challenging slopes and trails in the state of Pennsylvania. Cross country skiers can enjoy many different types of trails, and there are options for snow tubing if some other venturers are not avid skiers. They also have many different dining options such as The Black Bear Inn for fine dining, The Clubhouse for something casual and low-key, and Mueller’s pub which is a great place to spend time with friends and family and have a good time. Blue Knob also features indoor and outdoor pools and hottubs, tennis courts, and saunas. So, not only can you get away and disconnect, it could be a great family or friend-filled trip with some great post-skiing activities!
