The ex-boyfriend of the victim reportedly told her father that she asked him to drop her off in the middle of nowhere in Destin to stay with a friend named Stacey, right before she vanished. Santa Rosa Sheriff, Bob Johnson, announced on Sunday that Cassie’s body was found buried in a barn in Springville, which is about three-hundred miles north of where she was last seen in Navarre Beach. Ex-boyfriend, Marcus Spanevelo, who was arrested on Saturday, has reported ties to the property. Text messages exchanged between Spanevelo and the victim’s father on March 28 state, “Stacey moved to Alabama a while ago. Cassie would never have you drop her off anywhere. Is her car at your house?” Carli's father said to Spanevelo. Later that night, Cassie’s worried father received a message from her cell phone number saying that she was having car trouble and would be staying the night at Spanevelo’s house.

She was then officially reported as a missing person that day.

Cassie’s car was discovered in the parking lot of Juana’s Pagodas in Navarre Beach, where she was supposed to pick up her daughter from Spanevelo; her personal belongings were also found in the car. Police were concerned for the safety of Cassie because her credit card and cell phone had not been used in four days. Sheriff Bob Johnson stated, “Usually you don’t go four days without hearing from them, or them using a credit card, cell phone … so yeah, we’re concerned.” Spanevelo and Saylor, Carli and Spanevelo’s four-year-old daughter, were located in Birmingham on Wednesday where the child was handed over to Alabama Child Services. On Thursday, the FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement joined the investigation for assistance.

Spanevelo was arrested on Friday in Lebanon, Tennessee for destruction of evidence, tampering with evidence, and giving false information. Additional charges are pending as the autopsy results are released, which is scheduled for Monday. Carli’s family told reporters that Marcus Spanevelo has been threatening her.

Johnson, an official working on the investigation, stated, “He was totally uncooperative. He never cooperated with us.” He also said, “And that goes a long way. It’s your baby’s mother and she’s missing — and you’re not going to cooperate with authorities? That’s pretty tell-tale.”

Cassie’s remains were found in a barn in St. Claire County, Alabama on Saturday night during a search warrant nearly one week after she went missing. Police announced that her body was identified by a tattoo. The property her remains were found on were traced back to Spanevelo, who has been working and living in the Birmingham area.
