Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

Liam Riexinger, Freshman

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates May 5th, the day that the honors the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Army in 1862. It was the Battle of Puebla in Puebla City. The Battle of Puebla was extremely important due to the fact that the French controlled Mexico until this battle, and the victory led to Mexico going back to being an independent republic. Every year, this day is a huge celebration for the Mexicans and others around the world, and there are quite a few places you can go to celebrate.

A cost-free celebration is occurs in Denver, which is held on May 4th and May 5th from 10 am onwards. It is a full celebration featuring multiple bands.

There are some Mexican bands that are expected to perform, including Banda la Chacaloza de Jerez, La Fiebre del Sabor, Fito Olivares y La Pura Sabrosura, Banda la Patrona, Funky Pinho, and Thumpin’. These bands will help commemorate the day and event and is also one of the most popular ways to celebrate in Denver.

There are also many parades to celebrate, including one in Dallas-Fort Worth Texas. Texas has a multitude of celebrations for Cinco de Mayo due to their close proximity and shared cultural history with Mexico. This area also has a large amount of authentic Mexican restaurants that celebrate the holiday authentically.

While these are the major areas in America to celebrate, Mexicans themselves go all out to celebrate their independence. Almost no matter where you are, Mexicans will meet out in the town square during midnight and shout “Viva Mexico!” to mimic Miguel Hidalgo and his shout to celebrate Mexican freedom.

No matter which option you choose, whether going to Denver for the free concert, Texas for the authentic Mexican restaurants, or putting your own twist on it, there are so many ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
