Gianna Gammello, Freshman
47 years ago on October 5th, 1973, Elton John released his album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', not expecting the uproar that came after it.
This album was John’s seventh studio album, with some deeming it as his best. The album contains hits including: “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Saturday Night’s alright for Fighting,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Harmony,” and “Funeral for a Friend”.
The album was recorded in May 1973 using a track tape recorder and could fall under any of the following genres: rock, pop rock, or glam rock. John’s album was recorded at the Château d'Hérouville in France after unexpected complications raised regarding the desired location in Jamaica.
Since it was released, the album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. In 2003, the album was introduced to the Grammy Hall of Fame. In both 2003 and 2012, the album ranked number 91 on Rolling Stones Magazine list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album also ranked number 59 in Channel 4’s 2009 list of the 100 Greatest Albums. John’s album was also included in the book ‘Albums You Must Hear before You Die’.
The album was certified gold in October 1973 and was given a gold 5x platinum in March 1993. It was later given a 8x platinum in February 2014.
Whether your opinions on the album are positive or negative, it’s clear that the album broke records and sat in the charts for quite some time, and is still breaking records.
All of this being said, happy birthday ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’!
