Ben Scoggin, Senior

According to ABC news, a Florida motorcyclist was killed on June 10th after receiving a lightning strike to his head. The man was driving on Interstate 95 when a bolt of lightning struck his helmet causing him to crash his motorcycle. He veered off the road and did not survive the impact of the crash. An off duty police officer saw the whole event and rushed to help the man. The odds of this happening are 1 in over 13,000. Nine out of every 10 people in the United States who are struck survive, according to a 2016 study presented at the International Lightning Detection Conference and International Lightning Meteorology Conference. The man’s helmet was completely destroyed by the lightning strike however he most likely died from the crash rather than the actual lightning strike. While the majority of lightning strike victims survive, the event can leave you with all kinds of problems. Victim of a lightning strike can experience muscle soreness, headaches, cognitive problems and nausea. As a result of the crash almost all lanes were closed on I-95. Florida has the highest amount of fatalities from lightning related incidents since 2009.
