Hey Pirates,
It’s been a wild ride this year at the Pearl, as we transitioned to focusing on our Instagram @phspiratespearl (give us a follow!) and our website, which now houses all of the articles that our journalism class writes. It was definitely a transitional year, but we’re so happy with the modern, digital direction that our publication is moving towards. I’ve been writing for the Pearl for all four years of high school, becoming the Sports Editor my junior year and finally the Editor in Chief this year. I feel that I’ve been really involved in community events throughout high school due to journalism. I was so honored to take the leading role this year, and have loved creating our social media platform, covering events, exercising my passion for sports media, and starting our Unsung Heroes series every month, where we interview underappreciated staff members. It’s safe to say that working with now Vice-Principal Mrs. Schlosser for the first couple years and now our amazing advisor Mrs. Trieu has allowed my passion for journalism to blossom, and granted me unrivaled opportunities to express myself. When I come back on breaks from studying Broadcast and Digital Journalism at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, I hope to see the journalism program grow and develop even more than it already has. Thank you to everyone who has continuously supported and written for the journalism program at Palisades. I’m so grateful for the first step in my journalism career and for the amazing community at Palisades High School.
Signing off,
Ashley Wenskoski
Senior Editor in Chief
Sophomore year I took Journalism I because it sounded cool and, well, I heard it was an easy class. I quickly realized that it was more than a fun elective. Taylor Rufe, previous editor-in-chief, mentored me and I got to see how much work went into the school publication, the Pirates’ Pearl. I began editing and writing articles and fell in love. Thank you Mrs. Schlosser for helping me find my place in the program. Since then, the Pearl has seen amazing growth. With the help of Mrs. Trieu and Ashley, we were able to modernize our publication. Gone are the days of trying to fix the printer (shoutout to Mrs. Hornberger!). Thank you for all your support (and follows) as we updated our social media presence. Most importantly, I have loved working with so many talented students and supportive staff. Thank you to all the people I have bugged for interviews and pictures. Thank you to my fellow journalists for always being there to bounce ideas off of. Once again, thank you Mrs. Schlosser and Mrs. Trieu. You have been amazing mentors and challenged me to constantly better myself. My time in high school would have been much different, albeit less stressful, without journalism. I am forever grateful. I cannot wait to see what else the Pearl has in store!
