According to ABC News, the Kurdish authorities in northern Syria have confirmed the transferring of eight American woman and children back from the Islamic State, as of Wednesday, June 5th. The group of eight were captured with the Islamic State group, according to Kurdish officials.
Although the identities of the eight people who were sent back to the United States have not been shared to the public, Kurdish Senior Official Abdulkarim Omar has revealed that the group consisted of six children and two women. The group was released back to America after the United States’ government requested for them to be transferred. Officials have not revealed many details of the situation. It still remains unclear as to exactly when the group left Syria, who they were transferred over to, and where the American citizens were taken after transfer.
This is the second situation this year in which Syria transferred U.S. nationals back to America. A similar situation occurred earlier this year in which four children and a woman returned to America after being captured with the Islamic State. There are many who still remain in detention after being accused of working with the Islamic State, but Abdulkarim Omar revealed that only “humanitarian cases” are being repatriated, or sent back, to America. Therefore, many people, some of which are innocent, still await trial in detention.
