Johnson and Johnson Vaccine Update

Kaylina Cirino, Freshman

The United States lifted the pause on the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, and will continue to use it. The Food and Drug Administration announced this on Friday, following an 11-day pause. The announcement came after a CDC advisory committee voted to lift the pause, but advised adding a warning about the increased risk of very rare but severe blood clots. The vote to lift the pause was 10 to 4. Many people are avoiding the vaccine because of the blood clots, but are still using other vaccines. They have put warnings about the vaccine. Mostly women have been affected with blood clots.

J&J CEO says the Covid vaccine may be an annual shot. “Unfortunately, as [the virus] spreads, it can also mutate,” he told CNBC’s Meg Tirrell during a Healthy Returns Spotlight event. “Every time it mutates, it’s almost like another click of the dial, so to speak where we can see another variant, another mutation that can have an impact on its ability to fend off antibodies or to have a different kind of response not only to a therapeutic but also to a vaccine.” The department of Health and Human Services announced in August it reached a deal with Janssen, J&J’s pharmaceutical subsidiary, worth approximately $1 billion, for 100 million doses of its vaccine. This deal gives the federal government the option to order an additional 200 million doses.

The side effects of the J and J vaccine are similar to other vaccines. The side effects include: tiredness, headaches, sore muscles, chills, and fevers. These side effects usually start within a day or two of getting the vaccine. They might feel like flu symptoms and may even affect your ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. “These vaccines have not been tested head to head, so it’s impossible to do a really accurate comparison,” she said. “What matters most is … they are all effective at preventing the most severe COVID outcomes, including hospitalization and death.” With the J&J Janssen vaccine, the benefits of the one-dose regimen far outweigh the risks. For the people that worry, they can access Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. There have been more than 180 million doses of mRNA vaccines by Pfizer and Moderna, administered with no reports of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, which was causing the blood clots in the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Even though the Johnson and Johnson vaccines have been released again for the public, other options are able.
