National Fire Prevention Week

Krista Sovil, Freshman

International Fire Prevention Day is a very important day to have since it educates American citizens about fire prevention, safety, and how important and serious fire prevention is. Out of the world, the United States of America has one of the highest fire death rates. Around 25,000 injuries and 5,000 deaths occur yearly because of fire disasters. This makes fire education and safety very important. Fire prevention day occurs every October. It is a full day of awareness in schools and there are fire prevention activities at some fire stations as well. Even though Fire Prevention Day is labeled as Fire Prevention “Day” it actually is a fire prevention week. Fire Prevention Day affects and educates American citizens, so they know how to prevent a fire and stay safe in case a fire breaks out. If American citizens aren't educated about fire safety, their lives could be in danger, and they could cause wildfires, house fires, and any other fire disasters. Fire Prevention Day is October 9, 2020; Fire Prevention Week starts on October 9th in commemoration of the great Chicago Fire. The great Chicago fire had started on October 8, 1871, which had caused massive damage. Fire Prevention Day is to educate citizens about how to prevent fires and what to do when a fire breaks out in your home. Fire fighters often go to schools to teach children the “STOP, DROP, and ROLL” rule. Due to the Covid-19 virus, some firefighters will most likely not be going to schools, but will possibly virtually teach children about fire safety.

There are many injuries and deaths caused by fires in America. People should have the knowledge about fires and how to appropriately save yourself and family in case a fire breaks out around you. As many citizens know, the California wildfires were caused by uneducated people at a gender reveal party. This was caused by people who were uneducated with fire safety. As many know, these wildfires are still burning and are damaging land and buildings and have taken lives. Fire Prevention Day is extremely important to educate the people of America.
