The History of Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is a special holiday to celebrate those special people in your life, but what made this holiday what we know it as? February 14 is a day meant to celebrate the loved ones in our life and acknowledge how much they really mean to us. What many people don't know about this holiday is how it has formed over time to create this special day for many across the world. Valentine’s Day was first known to be celebrated in the year 496! Saint Valentine's, cupid, and much more are all well-known celebrations that we can all remember. All together these helped form and create this joy spreading holiday!

Saint Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day was named after several Christian martyrs who gained this idea from a priest in 270 C.E. Many speculations have arisen from this time about the saints that helped to name this holiday. Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century. He created this holiday since his rival was the cruel king who hated all love and marriage. Saint Valentine wanted a way for creating revenge for those who disliked the concepts of marriage and love.


Another well-known figure of this holiday is Cupid. Cupid originated in Ancient Rome. Cupid is considered a god for love and all of its varieties. Many speculations arose since he is a Greek God, as he is considered to possibly be the son of Mercury. Other speculations also have been stated that he also may be the son of Venus. His purpose was to show everyone the importance of affection to keep everyone happy. Cupid would shoot a magical gold-tipped arrow into the heart of the people, which would cause them to fall deeply in love with others. This was a way for them to share the love with each other and be able to experience happiness!


Now Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular and loved holidays among many people! History played a great part in the development and furthering of this amazing holiday! It is a great way to show your appreciation and love for others. Many people will take initiative to celebrate this holiday by bringing others things like flowers and chocolates! Many others will also take the time the write out a card or express gratitude in any meaningful way!

Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for many years and has a deep powerful meaning that many people value! After being originated by a God in the third century, it has developed into a worldwide celebration that happens every February 14!
