The Supermoon of the Month

Kyle Cooper, Freshman

The Full Flower Moon is a supermoon which happens on May 26th every year. You can only see this certain type of supermoon in the East. The Full Flower Moon mainly occurs due to a lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse is when the moon moves into the Earth's large shadow. This supermoon only occurs when the moon, sun, and Earth are very closely aligned. The Full Flower Moon, like many other supermoons, is very easy to miss because this supermoon only occurs around 6:45 a.m. EDT.

Out of all names why would you call it a Full Flower Moon? Well to your surprise, the "Full Flower Moon" isn't the official name. Many people claim that this May full moon was named by Native Americans because flowers start to blossom at this time of the year. As the moon starts aligning with the sun, it will turn into a blood type color. This red color is caused by the red and orange light that is reflected through Earth's atmosphere. The blood type color will even look brighter to humans because of earth's atmosphere dust and clouds.

“Fortunately, anyone will be able to see the supermoon, as long as the sky is clear where they are.” says NASA. If the sky is clear, like NASA is expecting it to be, it will last for a total of 15 minutes. If you are living in the following states: Pennsylvania, Delaware, parts of New York, and the New England region, the supermoon will not be visible to you. This will be only the second supermoon of 2021, with the first one occurring in April, with April's Pink Moon. The supermoon will occur from 7:11 a.m. to 7:26 a.m.
