What To Know About No-Shave November and Movember

Updated: Nov 21, 2019

Toss your razors and shaving cream and donate to cancer research! Every November, men around the world celebrate what is known as No-Shave November and Movember. These organizations encourage men to grow out their facial hair to raise awareness for cancer. So don't be alarmed if there seems to be a serge of furry-faced men in your work-place. Motivate the men in your life to jump in on the movement throughout the month of November!

What is No-Shave November?

The No-Shave November organization was founded in November 2009, two years after the passing of a man named Matthew Hill who struggled with colorectal cancer. The association is dedicated to promoting the acceptance of body hair, which patients with cancer could otherwise lose. For 30 days, men and women are invited to grow out their hair and donate to the American Cancer Society with the money that would usually go towards monthly grooming. No-Shave November raised a more than $1.76 million in 2018, and the association continues to educate people about cancer prevention and save the lives of those battling cancer.

What is Movember?

Movember first started in Australia in 2003 by a group of men raising awareness for men's prostate and testicular cancer. Movember is similar to No-Shave November, but is specifically about the mustache. Men grow out their mustaches, sometimes making them into interesting styles, and donate their monthly shaving expenses towards the non-profit organization. The movement has spread across the world and expanded the idea to support men's health and fitness. No-Shave November and Movember are two different charities, but support the same idea of donating towards cancer associations.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many ways in which people can get involved in No-Shave November or Movember. Participate by growing out a beard, mustache, or even skip shaving your legs during the month of November. If you can't grow a mustache or beard, create a fundraising page or event to raise money for No-Shave November or Movember. You can also simply support someone in your life who is participating.

What Should I Know About Cancer?

Cancer is defined as a disease in which abnormal cells divide and spread to parts of the body and kill body tissue. There are over 100 types of cancer, and it is the second leading cause of death in the U.S., behind heart disease. Cancer can affect anyone, but about 30-50% of cancers can be prevented by not using tobacco and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
