Ashley Wenskoski, Senior

September 14, 2018

Get ready to paint your face purple and gold! Another school year is upon us here at Palisades, and for sports fans that means a schedule bursting with exciting games, matches, and meets to entertain us for the next few months. Football, girls and boys soccer, girls tennis, field hockey, and cross country all have their seasons in full swing as we head into mid-September. Here are season previews for each of our fall sports teams.

Football: The Pirates were the talk of the area last year for their storybook 13-1 season, league and district championship titles, and appearance in the state quarterfinal game. The good news is that they do not appear to be showing any signs of slowing down. Though the loss of a multitude of influential seniors has no doubt impacted the Pirates, they have shown versatility by starting this season 3-0 with victories over Palmerton and Wilson in Weeks 1 and 2. Week 3 proved to be an absolute thriller as the Pirates bested Northwestern Lehigh 35-34 in overtime. Senior captains Ethan Brader (QB), Ben Scoggin (OL), and RJ Smith (TE) as well as leaders Adam Marsh (FB) and Trey Gretzinger (RB) look to lead the Pirates towards victory over Catasauqua at home tonight as well as Southern Lehigh next week. Coach Ronalds’ team is currently ranked #9 in the area this week by Lehigh Valley Live and show no signs of stopping. The Pirates make every Friday night an event that you don’t want to miss in Kintnersville!

Soccer: The girls team has begun an exciting season under new leadership! Head Coach Chilton and senior captains Sydney Steere, Missy Koch and Stacey Badman led the Lady Pirates to a double overtime tie against Salisbury yesterday. With an overall record of 2-1-1, the girls are looking towards postseason contention. The boys soccer team has kicked off their season with a bang as well, with a record of 4-2 under senior captains Dan Muth, Ethan Scott, and Franz von Dyck. The Pirates achieved a notable win over Southern Lehigh with a score of 1-0, made possible by a von Dyck free kick. The next Pirates thriller figures to come against Notre Dame Green Pond on Thursday, September 20th at 7 pm.

Girls' Tennis: The girls tennis team currently has a record of 3-7 as they approach the final week of their season this week, with a tough match coming up against Pen Argyl on Tuesday. Senior leaders Claire Olmstead, Leah Spies, Anna Leinenbach, Maddie Freeman, Lisa Lochner, and Zoe Colgan-Sellers comprise the heart of the team and will celebrate their senior night on Friday, September 21st.

Field Hockey: Undoubtedly, the purple and gold field hockey club has a lot of heart. Though they have started the season with a record of 0-5, what they lack in the wins column they make up for in grit, determination, and pride says junior leader Ava Moser. They have also notably come close in a number of contests, and faced a lot of tough teams early in the season. They will continue to wage their battles led by sister co-captains Peri and Paige Kukowski.

Cross Country: The girls and boys cross country teams are ensuring that they are can’t-miss attractions this seasons with outstanding performances in their first meets. Girl co-captains Dorothy Curtin and Amy Farese have led the girls to a sparkling record of 8-1 thus far. “We have put a lot of training into this season and I have watched each athlete improve every day,” Curtin remarked, with the support of coaches Mr. Antoni and Mr. Kellman. The boys team has achieved measurable success as well at the start of the season, with team captains Jacob Leister and Teddy Koven acknowledging the team’s respectable 5-4 record.
