Last night, the two part series finale of the hit show Modern Family aired. After running for eleven seasons, the Pritchet, Dunphy, and Tucker families all said goodbye with an emotional ending. For anyone who does not know anything about the series, the show is a sit-com that throws the viewers into the lives of a father (Jay) now living with his second wife (Gloria) and his two grownup kids (Claire and Mitchell). The show started in 2009 and ran exactly 250 episodes. Here is a recap of what happened in the final few episodes, spoilers ahead.
In the second to last episode, husbands Mitchell and Cam moved into a new house and adopted a new baby boy named Rexford. However, their perfect new life is questioned when Cam gets a call and a job offer for a football head coach position in his home state of Missouri. He decides to accept the job and so Mitchell, Cam, their daughter Lily, and their new baby all go to see their family one last time to say goodbye. Meanwhile, in the Dunphy home, all three kids, Haley, Alex, and Luke are still living with their parents. But one by one, they all decide to move out. Haley is married with twins and she and her husband Dylan decide to move into Cam and Mitchell’s old house. Alex gets a job offer in Switzerland with a romantic interest and Luke finally gets into a college, the University of Oregon. This leaves the Dunphy house empty for the first time except for Phil and Claire. Claire will be starting a new job, but Phil’s future is left open. He was previously a realtor and he owned a small magic shop, so he will probably be sticking with that. It is also mentioned that the couple will take a RV trip just the two of them. Finally the show wrapped up Jay and Gloria’s life with the two of them spending the summer in Columbia to visit Gloria’s family. Jay had been learning Spanish as a surprise for his wife whose first language was Spanish. Gloria’s son and Jay’s stepson, Manny, would be spending a whole year sailing around on a cruise with his father and his half-brother’s, Joe, seemed to be left in the open, but he probably would follow his parents on the Columbia trip.
Though for the outside viewer, the ending wrapped everything up, this finale was not the ending that fans deserved. They fell in love with the characters only to have everyone split up in the finale. A show all about family and that special bond had the ending more sad and a way for the actors to say goodbye more than the actual characters portrayed themselves. After watching every episode, and seeing how much this show changed the TV world, each character deserved a flash forward of their life, or at least a happy ending instead of the sad one. In 2009, Modern Family was groundbreaking with one of the first normalized gay couples on television. In later seasons, they got married, a whole year ahead of the Supreme Court decision to legalize gay marriage. The show even brought together politicians as both Democrats, including the Obama’s, and Republicans, including the Romney’s, agreed that Modern Family was their favorite show.
In spite of the series finale being a disappointment, the crew sent out a Modern Farewell episode which showed the behind the scenes of the show and how much the show meant to all the actors as well as everyone working behind the scenes. This inside look aired an hour before the final episode, and may have been more a goodbye than the actual finale. Though the Modern Family era is over, the writers kept it open for possible spinoffs and reunions.
