College Student-Athletes Get Paid

Lane Frankenfield, Freshman

College athletes are starting to cash in. Big-time and well-known athletes, not so popular athletes—they can all get paid for playing a sport in college. Earlier this September, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young took action against Miami at the Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sept 4th. With the new NCAA rule, Bryce signed his name, image, and likeness away for an agreement of $800,000. College students have been waiting to be paid for all the fame they’ve brought to certain colleges.

Colleges believed that since they’re giving out free full-ride scholarships, and partial scholarships, student-athletes did not need to be paid a salary for their athletic contributions. Students get a free education on top of being able to play sports and be in the spotlight. Students get a dorm room and athletes get clothes. Since the kids aren’t professional athletes, they are still amateurs, and colleges think they shouldn’t get paid.

However, students do believe they should be paid. Many students, who are good at their certain sport, tend to be more popular than someone who is not so good at their sport, which brings more popularity to a team. Certain students bring fame to some colleges. Trevor Lawrence, for example, brought a lot of fame to Clemson. People were paying a good amount of money to come to watch him play. When a lot of people go to one stadium it adds up to a lot of money. Students believe they should get some of that because they attract people to their school. The time and effort student-athletes have to put in is massive. Many players’ days start at 4 am to shower or eat before their first lift. They have to manage school plus all the stuff they have to know for their sport. It takes work and dedication.

For example, Bryce Young has jerseys with his name on them that people can buy. He should be paid for bringing fame to the team and people wanting to support Alabama. Instead of him getting a small amount of money from a purchase he agreed to get $800,000 throughout the season. Not only does he get paid to play he gets paid for being on Alabama's advertisements.

Trey Knox is another football player that is being paid to play. Trey Knox plays for Arkansas College. He is a wide receiver for the Racerbacks. He joined a partnership with PetSmart. Trey always posts on social media on how much he loves his dog, so teaming up with PetSmart was a smart move for him. Now, since he joined a partnership with PetSmart, he legally can get paid by PetSmart for using his name in commercials and articles.

Now that the NCAA rule is unfolding, more student-athletes are going to be paid for putting in their part on the team. Now that there are less requirements with the rule, if a student signs a contract for a certain amount of money, they have to stay in those requirements.
