The new movie ‘Enola Holmes’ puts a spin on the original Sherlock Holmes stories by adding his younger sister, Enola, into the mix. Enola is an interesting young girl that uses her skills to find her mother and potentially save a young lord.
The movie itself is based on the novel series by Nancy Springer, who originally wrote Enola into the Sherlock Holmes series. Netflix then used the complete young-adult fiction series as inspiration for their newest movie. The question being asked the most has to be “Is it worth the watch?” The answer, according to the public, is yes.
September 23rd marks the release of the movie ‘Enola Holmes’, which has already received kind reviews by Rotten Tomatoes and The New York Times. Most people watching recognized Enola, the main character, from another Netflix series: ‘Stranger Things”. Enola was played by a star of that show, Millie Bobby Brown, who had a successful career in these past years. After winning the Primetime Emmy Award in 2017 and releasing ‘Stranger Things’ season three in 2019, she followed up her years of new stardom by starring in this new hit movie.
Brown’s main co-star, Louis Partridge, also did a “stunning job”. He was an absolute hit in the movie, and critics say he played the perfect role of a love interest that allows the woman to have the spotlight. Although his career is not currently as big as Brown’s, he still quickly became an interest when the movie’s trailer was released. People say that it felt nice to have a “new” actor on the set, instead of the same, recycled actors. For his first large film, Partridge had very clear on-screen chemistry with Millie Bobby Brown and “handled the fame well”.
The story line starts out by introducing a young 16 year-old-girl named Enola, which is “Alone” backward. Enola is known to be a rebellious girl, as her mother has taught her everything she needs to know. Enola knows Jujutsu, has an interest in literature of all types, and is becoming a great detective like her older brother, Sherlock Holmes. However, her comforting life with her mother in their peaceful house could not last long because on Enola’s 16th birthday, her mother was nowhere to be found. All that was left was her birthday gift and some hidden clues. Following that, her two older brothers arrive to help search for their mother.
Mycroft Holmes, her eldest brother, suggested Enola be sent to a boarding school because her behavior was irregular. Enola works out the clues her mother left her and runs away in search of her before she can be sent away to boarding school. The plot then continues with Enola meeting a young boy named Viscount Tewksbury, a soon-to-be lord. Together they travel to London, where they part ways. But something can’t stop Enola from changing her path and going on to find Tewksbury instead of her mother. Although the ending is a cliche, most of the audience members considered it one of the “best movies to be released” during quarantine. With an astonishing 82 percent, overall audience score and a 91 percent, on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Tomato Meter”, this movie shocks many critics and viewers with its “quality content”. Unfortunately, this movie only received a 6.7/10 rating on IMDb and a 66 percent rating on Metacritic.
