What to Watch for Halloween

Although a chilling, fun Halloween movie can be watched all-year around, there's nothing like watching one on a crisp Halloween night with a table of junk food and a group of friends. Here are some movies that own the hearts of horror, kid-friendly, and spooky movie lovers that are worth watching for Halloween.

Starting off with a friends and family classic, Hocus Pocus. This film stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Directed by Kenny Ortega. Hocus Pocus is about a teenage boy, Max, who has awakened three dead witches. He goes on an adventure with his sister, a new friend, and a magical cat to stop the witches from becoming immortal. The film is rated PG and is an exceptional choice for a family and friends night in.


Moving on, next is an award-winning nominee for best horror film, Midsommar. It stars Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, and William Jackson Harper, and is directed by Ari Aster. Although Midsommar does not exactly embody the Halloween mood, it is certainly a very disturbing and spine-chilling story. It takes place in Sweden with beautiful views but not a very beautiful experience. A couple and some friends travel to a town in Sweden for their midsummer festival. But turns out they have been staying with a pagan cult. If you enjoy watching thriller, horror, and drama films you will certainly enjoy watching this one. This film is rated R and contains graphic scenes.


Not to leave out comedy lovers, a great scary comedy film to binge is Scary Movie. It's directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. The film is filled with dark humor, focuses on the horror mystery genres, and pop culture parodies. To add on they have made multiple Scary Movies so don’t shy away from having a movie marathon! This story is about a group of teenagers accidentally hitting a man while driving. They then begin to get stalked by a familiar masked killer. Watch this movie for the suspense and a laugh. The film is rated R.

What is Halloween without a Tim Burton movie? Tim Burton is a director, producer, writer, and artist that has created gothic horror imaginative films. Some include Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie, and much more. But the one recommended for this Halloween is The Nightmare Before Christmas. Created by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selik. The story follows the main character, Jack Skeleton, who is the pumpkin king of Halloweentown. Jack becomes bored with the same old tradition and ends up finding himself in Christmastown causing mischief. This is a great kid-friendly Halloween movie. The rating is PG.


Moving on to a more horrific and frightening film, this next one is Us. Us has won many awards and has 93% Rotten Tomatoes. It stars Luptia Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Elisabeth Moss and is directed by Jordan Peele. It takes place in an old childhood home which a family moves into. Adelaide Wilson, the wife, is growing concerned that something terrible will happen. Soon those fears become reality and four masked strangers invade their house. The family is forced to fight for their survival. When the masks come off it reveals a huge plot twist. This suspenseful horror film is worth watching on Halloween night. The movie is rated R.


Not to leave out A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), which stars John Saxon, Ronee Blackley, Heather Lagenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Johnny Depp, and is directed by Wes Craven. There are many versions of A Nightmare on Elm Street, but according to Rotten Tomatoes the 1984 film is superior. Critics say the horrifying visuals of Freddy Kruegar still causes nightmares to this day. It's a classic slasher film about teenagers who are haunted by Freddy Keuegar in their dreams but then find themselves killed in reality. Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) is trying to unravel the mystery before it's too late. Watch this on Halloween for a scare. This film is rated R.


Lastly, Halloween (1978) is a great movie for a Halloween movie marathon. With a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is the best Micheal Myers movie to watch. Halloween stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Kyle Richards, Nick Castle and is directed by John Carpenter. It starts off with young Micheal Myers murdering his sister, then serving a 15 year jail sentence. Once released on October 30, he seeks out new victims. This movie is thrilling, suspenseful, alarming, and captivating. Snuggle up with a blanket and enjoy this horrifying scary movie. This film is rated R.


Halloween is only a couple days away! Get ready to have a movie marathon, eat some popcorn, invite friends or family, and watch all the Halloween movies your heart desires.
