Girls Basketball Season Predictions

Sydney Odle, Junior

Winter has arrived, which means it is time for a change to indoor sports! The Lady Pirates basketball team starts off the season this Friday away at Pennridge. The junior class is full of athletic and capable players who have taken authority to bring wins home this time. Returning stars such as Livi Marton, Libby Stiansen, and Trinity Williams are players to be on the watch for this season. I interviewed Livi Marton and Libby Stiansen about their predictions for the upcoming season.

Interview with Livi:

Who do you consider your toughest opponent(s) will be this season?

Livi: Our toughest opponent this season is Notre Dame Green Pond. They are a private school and have recruited good players who are vital to their group. Last year we lost to them by a lot. They also won Districts, and they did not lose many seniors who were crucial to their team.

Do you believe your team can make it to Districts?

Livi: Yes, I think we can pull through to Districts because we gained more girls this year, and it has completely transformed the way we practice (for the better). The team is very close, and some of us have been playing together since we were in third grade, so we know how to read one another. It makes a difference being close with your team and knowing their strengths and weaknesses.

What team(s) will be a leading competitor for the Colonial League championship?

Livi: Northwestern and Notre Dame Green Pond.

What are your predictions for your game this Friday against Pennridge? Score prediction?

Livi: I think we can win as long as we stay focused and try our best. It will be a competitive game because they are a skilled team. My score prediction would be 45-38, with us winning.

Interview with Libby:

Do you think this years’ season offers more potential to win games than last year?

Libby: Yeah, I believe that this year will be better. We gained more players this year, and numbers definitely make a difference during practice and especially in games. Being able to scrimmage in practice and go up against my teammates makes our team stronger. The team was through the ups and downs last season, but we have a new coach who knows the game well, and he changed the dynamic of the team.

Who is the key player(s) that prompts the team together?

Libby: I’d say Olivia Marton; she is our point guard, and she is someone the team looks up too. She is always working hard during practice and never slacks off. She goes 100% all the time, and it makes herself and the team better. She is encouraging on the floor, and she brings our team together with her positive attitude.

You face your rival Saucon Valley on 1/11 at Home. What are your predictions for the game?

Libby: Last year, we overcame Saucon Valley in the last game of the season by one point, which was a crazy feeling. We were lacking one of our starters and only had five players able to play for the whole game. It was a lot of tiring work put into winning that game, but it was so worth it. The team has been working hard the past few weeks, and we plan on beating Saucon again. We have ⅘ of our starters coming back to the 2019-2020 season, and it is looking bright!

What are your predictions for your game this Friday against Pennridge? Score prediction?

Libby: Pennridge has a fantastic basketball program and is expected to be extremely successful this season on both the boy's and girl's teams. Pennridge is a huge school, and the girl's team is a deep roster. Neither Palisades nor Pennridge knows what to expect going into the first game of the new season. I’m expecting my team to challenge them and put up a good fight against Pennridge, but ultimately I think they will come out with the win. My score prediction for the game is 53-38.
