Halloween During Covid

Angela Henry, Sophomore

It has been two years since Covid-19 started. Our lives as a whole have been flipped upside down and we are trying to adjust to a new normal. There is a vaccine that came out that is supposed to be protecting people from Covid. Masks are still required when entering an enclosed place, but outside you can have your mask off. Covid last year was much worse than this year, but it has in no way gone away.

Halloween is a holiday where people come together and go to people's houses and trick or treat.

This year, many people are questioning whether they should or should not let their children go out with their friends and go trick or treating. There are a lot of risks and concerns that people have about this. There are ways to let your children still have a childhood and also be safe. If you and your family live in a suburban or rural area then there are many ways to be safe and still have fun.

Mrs. Duke has two young boys. She has some concerns and some ideas about what people can do about Halloween during Covid. “Still during Covid, you can take the candy when you get home, wipe them all down, and let it sit for a while.” Kids should deserve to be kids. Covid has been controlling people's lives for a long time and at a certain point, people get sick and tired of being on lockdown. We all need to stay safe but also live our lives to the fullest.

When living in a suburban or rural community, truck or tricking is a lot different and easier because you are already separated from other people. “This year I feel like it will be better because there will be more people involved. Instead of my children going to about ten houses and getting candy, we can just have a truck or treat with the neighbor.” Truck or treat is where you go into a big parking lot and people decorate your car and have your truck full of candy. Children go to each car and get candy. It is a way to socially distance yourself and let your children have an amazing and memorable childhood.

There are several ways for people to go trick or treating and still be safe from Covid. In the suburbs, it is more spaced out. But when you live in a major city, it can be a little more difficult to social distance. Most parents in the city contemplate whether or not they should let their children go out and trick or treat. Mrs. Duke suggested that she “would definitely minimize the number of houses I would go to just to cut up contact with other people instead of going to 100 houses. The truck or trick is so much fun for the children to dress up and spend time with their friends. It is a way to minimize the contact that they have with people and let them have fun.” The children in major cities are more in danger with Covid because they are around a lot more people than the children that live in the rural communities. The best option to let your children have a childhood and stay safe is to minimize the amount of houses that they are going to or have a trunk or treat. These are two great ideas that you can do because Covid is serious and no matter how much fun you want to have during Halloween, you also want to stay safe. Halloween this year will be so much fun but Covid is still around and we all must stay safe, not just for ourselves but for other people. Happy Halloween!
