How Harmful is the Coronavirus?

By: Erik Martin, Junior

The coronavirus, or Covid-19, is a virus that is very infectious, causing a lot of panic because of how fast it spreads. From April 1 to April 8, an average of ninety thousand people were infected daily nationwide according to worldometers.info. According to https://www.arcgis.com, the USA has the most cases as of now, and the number of infected is steadily increasing. Covid-19 spreads by droplets produced by a person coughing or sneezing and is contracted when the virus enters a person’s eyes, mouth, or nose. People can also breath in the virus if they are too close to someone with it. According to the CDC, the symptoms of the coronavirus are fever, cough, tiredness, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing, pain in chest, and other respiratory ailments. People could also show no symptoms, which makes people more afraid because people could be infecting people unconsciously. The virus can last from one to fourteen days in a person's system, but around eighty percent of people don’t need any special medical treatment to get rid of it. The twenty percent of people who need special treatment are usually at-risk people who have weakened immune systems due to age or a pre-existing medical condition. At-risk people are more susceptible to death from the coronavirus, and currently it is extremely dangerous to them because of how fast the virus spreads and the fact that infectious people could have no symptoms and infect them unconsciously. The virus is very harmful to at-risk people and puts them in a lot of danger, but typically people who get Covid-19 are fine after fourteen days as of now. The best thing for people to do now officials say is to stay indoors and away from crowds to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
