Mule Day 2022

Fred Glasby III, Freshman

Mule Day is an annual celebration in Columbia, Tennessee, the “Mule Capital” of the world. The celebration began in 1840 as “Beeder’s Day,” a meeting for mule breeders, but it now attracts over 200,000 people and takes place over four days.

In addition to mules, traditional Appalachian food, music, dancing, and crafts are featured. Mule Day has been a popular Colombian celebration for the last 170 years, starting back in the 1840s. At these celebrations, if you attend you can see square dancing, a mule driving contest, a horse show, a craft show, or attend a flea market. Some other events are “working mule” and lumberjack competitions.

Back in 2020, when there was a huge Covid-19 breakout, the festival had to shut down. This was because of the Covid-19 pandemic and multiple lockdowns. The lockdowns and pandemic made everything 10 times harder than it actually was. The Mule Festival has not happened in the last 2 years, but this year they are expected to have the biggest audience they have ever seen or had.

At the Mule Day Festival, there are many events planned for the whole week. This includes a few mule shows, with some being: Mini Mania Show/Miniature Donkeys & Mules Thursday 12:00 Noon; Log Pulling Competition Thursday 12:00 Noon; and Feed Time Race Thursday 2:00 PM. They also have a few dancing and music events like: Pickin' and Grinnin' and Live Music with Tony Malugin, Katie Stewart and Logan Blade Friday 6:30 PM. They also have some fun, entertaining events like: Arts & Crafts Festival and Flea Market, Wagon Train, Jackpot Mule Races Thursday 4:00 PM, and a Parade Saturday 11:00 AM.
