National Adoption Month

Taylor Diehl, Freshman

Children and families of all ages can go through many different struggles that can lead them to no choices, so the month of November is meant to spread awareness and appreciation to all the families and children that have gone through the adoption process. This year in the United States, it is estimated that around 135,000 children will get adopted this year! Adoption is the act of bringing another child that is biologically someone else’s, and bringing it up as your own. Currently about 10% of women are infertile, this means that it is nearly impossible for them to conceive a child. This kind of news can be heartbreaking and devastating to many people who are trying to start a family. When it comes to adoption, it can be a very long and dedicated process that you have to go through. From the start, it can take 6-18 months, not even including the waiting list. Currently, there are 400,000 children in foster care, with the average age of all the children being eight years old. Along with that, currently, there are over 140 million orphanages in the world. Adoption can be a very hard time for many children to handle and face, but will be rewarding when children are finally given a fair chance at life. November is a month to give acknowledgement to all of the families and kids that follow through with this process. Along with celebrating the adoptions that take place with families, another type of adoption that is to be celebrated is with animals. Many domesticated animals also end up being abandoned or mistreated. This leads to a lot of animals constantly being mistreated and isolated from all contact and attention. Many animals are bought before owners understand the true responsibility that comes along with the pet. Many people see no problem with leaving an animal outside if it didn’t fit their families, or they will simply give them up for adoption. Although, after being put up for adoption, a lot of the time if they are old or sick they will just be put down, which is why it is very important to make sure that you are doing proper research.

Since November is National Adoption Month, here are some great ways to spread awareness to what everyone one is going through. One great way to voice an opinion and spread the word about adoption would be through social media. Social media is a great way to get your voice out there on a heavily used platform. Another way is to get involved with groups that are able to help. Working for charity groups is a great way to put yourself out there and get more educated!
