National Chocolate Milk Day

Coleman Poster, Junior

Every year on September 27th, National Chocolate Milk Day is celebrated. Whether it is a cereal improvement, or a dipping sauce for cookies, chocolate milk is a fun and tasty treat that all ages can enjoy. However, chocolate milk wasn’t always the treat everyone knows.

In Jamaica during the 1700s, chocolate water was a very popular drink with the locals. However, travelers would find the drink nauseating. One day, a man named Sir Hans Sloane found a way to make the infamous drink more tasty. By replacing the water with milk, Sloane had improved the drink drastically. The milk gave the beverage a more palatable taste, making it a great replacement for the water once used.

Today, chocolate milk is a well known and beloved drink that people still like to take a swig of once in a while. Served in school lunches, being homemade, or just buying it from your local grocery store, chocolate milk can be found in all sorts of places. If you’ve never tried chocolate milk, maybe give it a try next time you see it. Just don’t let your dogs get close enough to drink it, let’s just say things won’t be pretty.

Bonus: Homemade Chocolate Milk Recipe

Ingredients:

2 ounces milk

1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons of confectioners' sugar

Steps to make it:

1. Gather ingredients.

2. Pour the milk into a glass and slowly add cocoa powder while blending with an immersion blender, spoon, or a small whisk. An immersion blender or a small whisk works best because they reduce the clumping of the cocoa powder.

3. Add powdered sugar until well blended.

4. Serve immediately or cover and place in the refrigerator until ready to drink.

5. Enjoy your homemade masterpiece.
