Netflix "Cuties" Review

Krista Sovil, Freshman

Both Netflix and Maimouna Doucoure, the director of “Cuties,” are being bashed because of the “tasteless” and “inappropriate” display of the Netflix movie. Maimouna Doucoure is a 35 -year-old French film director and screenwriter who directed the French film “Cuties.” Doucoure has done one other movie called “Maman”. She recently became popular after “Cuties” had gone internationally on Netflix. Critics have been bashing “Cuties” because they say that the movie is “Explicitly sexualizing 11 year old children.” This outrages some critics because they do not like the idea of the movie promoting young girls to start acting “skimpy” and “slutty”. Some critics are furious with Netflix because the promotional image for one of the award-winning popular movies on Netflix shows “young girls posing in skimpy outfits.” This was upsetting people before the movie even came out. Sexualizing pre-teen girls was outraging to people from Congress and other critics as well.

Some people have been talking about canceling Netflix or at least the removal of the inappropriate movie “Cuties”. Some other critics argue that “Curies” is being misjudged and is actually a movie that people can learn from. Plus, Critics bring up a point that there are so many films out there that have nudity and all sorts of sexualization that is not in “Cuties”. “ Cuties is telling a story on what some pre-teen girls are like”, critics argue, though people say that if parents who struggle with their teen girls watch this movie, they could possibly learn from it and understand it better. “Cuties” originally came out in France on August 19, 2020, and went internationally September 9, 2020 on Netflix. The movie was created at multiple different locations in France; it took about 3 months to film.

Doucoure has heard the recent debate about if the movie is just plainly inappropriate or if it is being misjudged; Doucoure specified that the movie was not made to promote hypersexualization but was based around how and what she grew up with. Since Doucoure was an immigrant, she was not in the best neighborhood growing up, and when she went to neighborhood parties she said she would see young girls dancing sexually. At some point in her childhood, Doucoure has said she “questioned her femininity” because she grew up dealing with two cultures to abide by. She had said at some points there was too much going on in her life that she just needed to get away and hang out with friends. The debate of if the movie “Cuties” is inappropriate and should be taken off of Netflix, or if it is being misread, should be known because people can learn off of this movie.
