The movie franchise Deadpool has gained a lot of popularity due to it's funny and sometimes vulgar humor. With Deadpool and Deadpool 2 being such impressive hits, most expected the newest Christmas version, Once Upon a Deadpool, to not be the best of the bunch. Personally, I was extremely underwhelmed with the film. With the creators taking out all of the funny, inappropriate jokes the movie was sort of bland. I felt like it was sloppy and not well-organized at all. The new version was similar to Deadpool 2, but cut down with less gaudy humor in order to make the PG-13 rating. It seemed that this movie was meant for the family and all ages, but from my standpoint hard to follow and didn't have the amusing crazy and funny scenes I was used to seeing from the franchise, making it extremely underwhelming.
If anything, this movie dimmed the previous love that I had for the Deadpool series. There were scenes where I would be waiting for a humorous element and it wasn’t there. I know that I might be writing a little harshly on this movie but it is because I had such high expectations going in due to my previous experiences with Deadpool. However, one thing that I actually really liked was the self-narration, which added a lot to the storyline. The banter between the two characters is really amusing. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) narrates the backstory of Deadpool 2 to a kidnapped Fred Savage (himself) who has been tied to a bed in a replica of his character's bedroom from The Princess Bride. Another aspect that I liked were the in-movie references to the rating. For example, one of the characters wakes up and has no idea where he is. He goes on to say ¨where the f-- am I?!¨ and Deadpool stops him and says ¨ah ah ah not so fast we are in a PG-13 movie now.” It's a wonder why the makers of Once Upon a Deadpool, armed as they are with their playful funny jokes, didn't use this opportunity to fully destruct and pick apart their own work. They criticize a few of their own lazy writing decisions and it is some fantastic satirical humor.
A few things that I took away from this it is that sometimes a PG-13 rating may make the creators more money and they will get more publicity. Reinventing Deadpool who is notoriously known as someone who is rebellious can really destroy a character and make the movie not fun to watch. It's good that this was a side sequel and did not affect the main plot to the other Deadpool movies. Deadpool is not very funny and cannot live without his swagger and his ¨ I don't care¨ attitude and vibe. Once Upon a Deadpool was a cute little experiment but didn't really live up to the hype and overall felt flat.
