Erin Wallbillich, Freshman
Many people participate in traditions to make Christmas enjoyable and memorable. The students at Palisades High School participate in different and unique traditions of their own. At the Palisades Pirates’ Pearl, we took the time to interview some students to get their input on their traditions.
Freshman Savannah Witt has a very unique tradition that her whole family enjoys. Savannah said, “Our Christmas tradition is a saran wrap ball and we take saran wrap, dollar bills and small toys in it and wrap them up in a ball and then you have to unravel it and the whole family does it. It gets really intense and you roll dice and if you get the same number, you switch to the next person.” Savannah and her family take part in this tradition every year. Not only is it fun, but they also get money and various prizes. It is a fun and competitive way to spend Christmas with her family.
Freshman Averie Winsor has a family tradition for all the older people in the family, but not too fun for the youngest. Averie said, “ My Christmas tradition is that every year we make fun of the youngest kid who is at the family dinner on Christmas and we pretend that there are elves in the woods and then they get scared and it is just funny. After a while, the kids aren’t as scared and laugh about it along with the rest of the family as well.” According to Averie, this tradition brings the whole family together and is something everyone enjoys. Even though the youngest is the one being pointed out, they still love it and have fun.
Freshman Rhiley Poniktera has a tradition that is not only fun but hilarious. Rhiley states, “My whole family and I all dress up as each other and have dinner together. We each get assigned to dress up as someone and everyone participates.” This tradition makes Christmas dinner a very interesting one. Rhiley’s family puts a lot of effort and planning into dressing up as each other. It may seem like a lot of work but in the end it's hilarious and fun to see how creative everyone got.
Freshman Brooke Brzezicki has not only one Christmas each year, but two. Brooke said, “For Christmas, I have two Christmas’ on both sides of the family. I personally don’t like my dad’s Christmas but I like my mom’s Christmas because I get more presents,.” On Christmas, Brooke enjoys time with her mom’s side of her family and her dad’s. It is a good time to see both sides as her family and just like her favorite part, get more gifts.
Freshman Jenna Magditch spends quality time with her siblings on Christmas Eve and other holidays. Jenna said “On Christmas, on Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve everybody in my family like my siblings all sleeps in one bedroom together and spends the night together. We also wake each other up in the morning on Christmas since we’re in the same room and then go and open our presents.” Jenna and her siblings always have so much fun with this tradition and spend a lot of time together to bond with each other. This is a good tradition to spend quality time with siblings and enjoy the holidays together.
Freshman Karlye Teman has a huge Christmas tradition. Karlye said “Every year, my family and I go out and cut down a fifteen-foot pine tree. There is a part in my house that has an opening that goes up next to the stairs. That’s where we put the tree. Then as a family, we spend time decorating the tree from head to toe in lights, ribbon, and ornaments. Then finally my youngest sister tops it off with a star. That is my favorite Christmas tradition that my family and I have.” Karlye’s Christmas tradition is a fun tradition to do every year. Instead of just getting a normal Christmas tree, they get a big one. This allows them to spend more time with each other decorating a bigger tree than decorating a normal-sized tree. This tradition is a fun and unique way to prepare and celebrate Christmas.
Everyone around the world has their own traditions for Christmas. The same goes for the students at Palisades High School. Every student has their own ways of spending Christmas with their family and extended family. All of those Christmas traditions are memorable and are held close to their hearts.
