Underwater Review

By: Jenn Youells Senior

The movie Underwater was released on January 10th, 2020 and stars Kisten Stewart as the main actress in this sci-fi thriller movie. Kirsten Stewart plays as a young mechanical engineer named Norah, who is 7 miles underwater with her captain as well as a few other crew members. Norah and her crew have been working together to drill down into the ocean floor, the marianas trench, and they are location in a very long and tall tube-like structure called the Kepler Drilling Station. The characters stay in the station much like it is their bunker.

The film begins with Norah speaking on the darkness of the bottom of the ocean about how difficult it is to tell day from night. She seems to be preparing for bed when her bed bunker is breached. She comes to her feet and quickly tries to gather people to a safety pod. Only one other member makes it to safety with her. They team up to find their way to get to another buncher and find the captain. Along the way, she finds another member, and they rush to find the captain. Once the captain is found, a few other members are found and gather to create a plan to get to a different bunker that is across the sea floor.

Norah is stressed about what has caused the breach of the bunker. While quickly working together and suiting up to begin their journey across the sea floor, the crew discovers that it was not an earthquake that cause the destruction of the station but a creature. The quick moving, alien-like creatures are strong and have killed many of their other members. The group realizes the dangers and the low chances of getting to the surface alive, but they still fight long and hard.

During the long duration of tracking around the ocean floor for the Shepherd Expeditionary Sight, Norah had close encounters with the grueling monsters and watches many of her members be taken away or killed by the monsters. During the journey to find the Shepherd sight, Norah finds herself alone after watching the fight between her captain and an alien. She searched and calls to her other members but finds it better to lay low and try to find the station of safety. Norah manages to make it to the Shepherd Expeditionary Sight, where she charges her oxygen and gains the energy to continue her search for her friends.

Many struggles were faced on the ocean floor with low visibility and the constant worry about the monsters. Norah loses her captain and many friends and members, but she manages to help a few get to the safety of the Roebuck Station, where she helped her friends to find security and shelter, but the jaw dropping ending was what was most shocking.

This movie was much more gory than what it seemed to be from the trailer, and it seemed to find a lot of hype about the aliens although there were few scenes with the human eating monsters. However, the movie was still very entertaining, and the ending was very interesting. The typical consideration of this movie is much like a common sci-fi thriller.
