Spooky Treats for Halloween

Isabella Mathews, Freshman

Halloween is the time of the year where people get to dress up as fun characters or people, go out and trick-or-treat for candy or throw a spooky party on the 31st of October. Halloween is celebrated all over the world. There are so many different ways to celebrate. One way is by making tasty and spooky recipes for this Halloween season. These treats will be great for party snacks or just to make for you and your family to all enjoy together.

The first treat is the classic caramel apple. For this recipe you are only going to need a few things:

  • 14 ounces of caramel

  • 3 tablespoons of water

  • ¾ of a teaspoon of vanilla extract

  • 8 large tart apples

  • 8 popsicle sticks

The first step is to insert the popsicle stick into the apple. Next you want to put your caramel into a bowl and microwave it on high for 1-1 ½ minutes, then stir. Then put it back into the microwave for 30-60 seconds until the caramel is fully melted. Then you are going to want to dip the apples into the caramel, place them onto wax paper, and let them cool until the caramel is solid. These apples are perfect for your Halloween party or just to enjoy with your friends while watching Halloween movies.

The next treat we have is a delicious dessert. You can make and eat these tasty loaves with many things. What you’ll need for this recipe is:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon of salt

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon of ground cloves

  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg

  • 1 ½ sticks (¾ cups) of unsalted butter

  • 2 cups of sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 15-oz can of 100% pure pumpkin

The first step is to preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Next, in a medium sized bowl, mix all of your dry ingredients together (flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg). Set this bowl aside. In a larger bowl use an electric hand mixer and beat your butter and sugar on medium speed, then start adding the eggs one at a time. Continue beating them all together until it is very light and fluffy. Now you can beat the pumpkin into the mixture. After adding the pumpkin, the mixture might look grainy and curdled but that is okay. After adding the flour mixture, mix everything together on a low speed. Finally, dump the mixture into your loaf tin, spread evenly, and put the tin in the oven to bake for 65-75 minutes. Afterwards, let the loaf cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes.
