Stress Awareness Month: The Best Ways to Reduce and Prevent Stress

Madison McGovern, Junior

Juggling loads of homework, lack of sleep, and my mother constantly pestering me to clean my room, I am certainly not the best “anti-stress spokeswoman.” Being a junior in high school has really opened my eyes to how I could seriously be doing better in managing a feeling that seems all too prevalent in my life, stress. Through careful examinations of web pages preaching the importance of stress management and “new, easy” ways one can do so, I have compiled five of the most effective and simplest ways a busy student, like myself, can find just a few minutes to unwind and simply forget about the assignments, tests, or social life happenings that may be causing stress to him or her.

1. Keep A Positive Attitude

A rare bad grade here and there will happen! All students and even your teachers know that. Keep your motivation up and strive to do better next time. There is always something bright around the corner and a break in your workload will come soon. A positive attitude can come from just seeing a good friend or petting a dog; never let the small stuff get you down!

2. Eat Healthy Snacks

Indulging on chips, ice cream, and soda will simply make you feel less motivated to manage your stress. While studying for the next big exam, make a small bowl of your favorite mixed fruits for a study snack. For dinners and lunches you can even experiment with some new healthy foods and get cooking to try something new!

3. Make Time for You

No, “you time” is not you in front of your laptop writing an essay. Chunk some time aside to do some things you enjoy like playing with your pet, watching your favorite show, or calling your friend. All these activities can reduce your stress and result in you feeling awesome again!

4. Exercise Your Body and Mind

A break from being slouched over at your desk all day and getting up and moving could be the best part of your day. Go on a walk or a bike ride if the weather is nice and enjoy your surroundings. If you are stuck inside, try looking up some workout videos on YouTube. There are a lot of motivating and uplifting workout trainers on YouTube that you can follow along with. If exercising does not suit you, put on your favorite upbeat song and jam; dancing can boost your mood in seconds! Though it may seem like your mind just needs a break, some would say reading a book, drawing, or playing the piano suits them best after a stressful day. Do what makes YOU feel good!

5. Time, Time, Time!

With all the things on your plate, it can seem like there are never enough hours in the day. Helpful strategies for managing your time can be as easy as writing down your homework and your estimated time you could get it done in or specific times assigned to each assignment. This will encourage you to get working and also to use your time wisely so that you can have time to unwind and de-stress.

These five strategies may not work for everyone, but, as a high school student myself, I believe they could be beneficial to all students feeling the stresses of school, work, or just about anything! The month of April is Stress Awareness Month, so take this time to read up on more articles and discover what methods work best for you and give you the best results.
