Thanksgiving Football

James Mitsch, Sophomore

With all of the restrictions this year for Thanksgiving, there wasn’t as much to do during the day. With lots of people being bored, NFL football games could be what saved Thanksgiving this year for some people. The NFL did a great job selecting the games this year, and all of them should be excellent games. At 12:30 the Detroit Lions played the Houston Texans, at 4:30 the Washington Football team played the Dallas Cowboys in a division rivalry game, and finally, at 8:20, the Baltimore Ravens played the Pittsburgh Steelers in another division rivalry game. These are all exciting games that had very engaging plays that left the viewer guessing on who will win.

The 12:30 game between the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans was a great game and may have changed the outcome of both struggling teams' end of season records. Both teams have not had a great year and were in serious need of a win. The Lions have so many weapons to use and they have a great quarterback, but their offensive line really struggles. The team needs to step up and be who they know they can be to try and finish the year out strong. The Texans on the other hand, have just made bad decisions. They fired their head coach mid-season, after he traded possibly the best receiver in the league, Deandre Hopkins. Hopkins was a key part of the team and brought them life when they needed it. Without him, they aren’t as good and are struggling to spark up their offense. The new coach is doing okay with the team but really came into the organization at a bad time. A win for them right now could lead to them seeing who they are, and doing what they know they can do.

The second game that was played between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Football team, had a lot of similarities to the first game. Both of these teams are struggling to spark their season into winning more games and taking over the NFC East. The NFC East is at a record low for wins and all four teams are playing terribly. Even with a 3-6-1 record, the Eagles are winning the division. With the Cowboys and Football team being 3-7, with one win, they can take over the NFC East. The game is a big division rivalry game and these two teams do not exactly like each other. The game was a good one because the teams went all out and hoped to come out with a win and lead the division.

Even with the final game that was supposed to play out between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens postponed multiple times, it was still a prime-time game and will be a very big deal for both teams. With the game having been played on a Wednesday, NFL fans had never seen this before and it could be an interesting situation the virus has brought us. It was another divisional rivalry game and the Steelers were undefeated and winning the division. Baltimore was looking to take away their undefeated season and try and get back on track to winning the division. There was a very big step back for the Ravens with two of their three quarterbacks testing positive for the coronavirus. The only Quarterback left was Robert Griffin the Third. He was a former MVP candidate before he suffered a terrible season-ending injury and some might say career ending due to him not playing much since the injury. He is now a starter again, and maybe we can see him do what we know he can do again.

In conclusion Thanksgiving football this year was an exciting day filled with great plays and huge hits. Not being able to see as many family and friends on Thanksgiving had many people turning to football. When they turned the TV on, most people shouldn’t have been disappointed this year with the games.
