While celebrating love on Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a pure concept, it can sometimes feel daunting to live up to the hype if you are in a relationship. By no means do I think that Valentine’s Day is only fun if you’re dating someone (actually, quite the opposite), but added pressure surely comes with the day if someone is close to your heart. On social media, everyone will be posting their celebrations with their significant other and undoubtedly we will see endless pictures of flowers, chocolates, heart balloons, etc. Personally, I think that this holiday can sometimes turn into a pressure-filled competition of which couple wants to flaunt their love more. If you are currently in a relationship, you don’t have to feel obligated to do whatever will get you the most likes on Instagram. Here are five ways to have an unforgettable Valentine’s Day with the person you love and actually have fun while doing it.
Go Out to Eat: Yes, I know, the obvious one. But hear me out. This year, we have the perfect opportunity to celebrate the big day belatedly. Instead of going out on Thursday the 14th, we are off from school on Friday the 15th which is even better. Postpone your celebrations for a day and enjoy a much more relaxed dinner out on Friday night, without having to worry about huge crowds and overly expensive prix-fixe menus. Plenty of great options surround our area for a reasonable yet ambiance-filled night out, such as Bamboo House in Frenchtown, Kome or Torre at the Promenade Shops of Saucon Valley, 86 West in Doylestown, or switch things up and visit the Ferry Market in New Hope. Or, for a more lowkey option, grab brunch in the morning since there’s no school! The world is your oyster.
Go for a Hike: I am aware that it is February. However, this weekend’s weather is looking mild with temperatures in the upper 40s-lower 50s. I think that we all have a little bit of spring fever at this point, so grab your Valentine and lace up your sneakers! Get those endorphins flowing and go on a little mini-adventure right here at home. Some great options for relatively private, quiet hikes with beautiful views of the Delaware River include the Milford Bluffs, Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary in Riegelsville, or Goat Hill Overlook in Lambertville, NJ. You could even bundle up and go at sunset to see the colors of the day (pinks, reds, and oranges) light up the sky.
Ice Skating: Believe it or not, winter is quickly leaving us, so take advantage of ice skating while you can. It’s a perfect date idea because it’s relatively cheap and is a great opportunity for hand-holding and picking each other up when you inevitably fall (laugh about it and make falling funny and cute, not embarrassing). It’s also a great chance to teach each other if one is better at balancing than the other. Go to Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem or Revolution Ice Gardens in Warwick. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you could make a day of it and travel to beautiful Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia and skate by the river at Blue Cross RiverRink.
Recreate Your First Date: This one is for the true romantics at heart. A special way to surprise your significant other would be to plan a total reenactment of the first time you went on a date, whether it was at a certain restaurant, movie theater, coffee shop, or sports venue. See how long it takes them to catch on while showing how much they mean to you by remembering your first time out together
Have a Night In: This does not have to be boring and can sometimes be a lot more fun than any other option depending on your mood. Queue up a list of cheesy rom-coms, stay in your sweatpants, and either order take out or even try to cook for each other (which could end up being very humorous). Owowcow just down the road from school even has special Valentine’s Day ice cream flavors that you could pick up for your movie marathon. Just staying home occasionally can be the most relaxing form in which to express your love.
