Ways to Enjoy the Winter Chill This President’s Day Weekend

Allie Wenskoski, Freshman

Don’t let the cold stop you this President’s Day Weekend. There is plenty to do outside, ranging from activities to do in the snow to hikes with impressive views. Our area is good for providing things to do, as we are close enough to drive to two cities, and there is also a lot of nature activities nearby. In the Poconos, snow tubing, skiing, and snowboarding provide

fun that the whole family will enjoy. In the nearby river towns such as Frenchtown, New Hope, and Stockton there is shopping, along with hikes up to bluffs and lookouts to see the Delaware River from a different and neat perspective. If you are looking to drive a bit further, there is always the Appalachian Trail, and also things to do in Philadelphia and New York City. Want to stay at home? There is plenty of ways to stay warm and celebrate winter right from your backyard. So grab your coat and scarf and head outdoors!

Blue Mountain offers fun for the whole family with relatively cheap prices. Everyone will find something to do, from snow tubing to skiing and snowboarding. Are you a big fan of snowy mountain fun? Season tickets are the most cost-effective option. But if you want a daily pass, the price ranges from 30 to 55 dollars. This resort also offers equipment rentals so you can enjoy the slopes and try something new. After an exciting day on the mountain, warm up in one of the few restaurants. Lodging is also available.

Not one for the snow, but ready for a hike with a rewarding view? The Appalachian Trail isn’t a far drive away. This trail goes from Georgia to Maine and crosses right here in Pennsylvania. Day hikes in the Delaware Water Gap are a great way to get moving in the cold and you’ll be on a famous trail! Don’t want to drive that far? State parks including the Delaware Canal and Nockamixon offer pretty views and they are only a short drive away.

If you are looking to be in a city, you’re in luck! Both Philadelphia and New York are only about an hour and a half away. There is plenty to do in both, including an outdoor ice skating rink in Philly. Blue Cross Riverrink is located in Penns Landing. The rink is open until March 3rd and only costs four dollars to skate. Need equipment? Skate rentals can be found here and are ten dollars a pair. Enjoy the winter chill for up to ninety minutes on the rink and then go warm up in the lodge. The Blue Cross Riverrink Winterfest also offers “cabins” to rent out if you want a bit of privacy. They are perfect for parties or celebrations. In New York, one of the best sights to see is the city skyline. The perfect spot to do this is from the Top of the Rock. There are three observation decks to see from, and a perfect spot to see the sunset. Tickets cost as low as forty dollars.

Without having to go anywhere, you can still enjoy the winter weather. Many people snuggle up to a fire with a cup of hot chocolate. Why can’t you do that outside? Normally a summer activity, try making a bonfire. The fire will make you plenty warm, and you can be out in the elements. This way, you can even enjoy the night sky by stargazing and you won’t need to go inside because you are cold.

There is plenty to do this winter, so don’t stay inside all the time. Go enjoy the snow and the cold by bundling up and getting active. Soon the snow will melt away and it will be spring, so appreciate the chill while you can.
