Week 10 Steelers/Bengals Matchup

Chantel Latham, Freshman

After the Steelers vs. Bengals matchup in week 10 of the season, the Steelers have taken another win with a now 9-0 winning streak. During this game, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had 4 touchdown passes, just one less than his record in week 10 against Carolina. On the opposing team, the Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was sacked four times, two of which were made by Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt.

In the first quarter, Roethlisberger threw an eight yard touchdown to JuJu Smith, and in the first half of the game, Roethlisberger threw a total of 243 yards. Wide receiver Diontae Johnson caught 6 passes in the first half, which included his 12-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Within the third quarter, any hope of coming back for the Bengals were depleted, when Roethlisberger threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chase Claypool. In the fourth and final quarter, Claypool scored yet another touchdown, being a 5 yard pass from Roethlisberger.

Among all nine games, the Steelers quarterback has thrown 22 touchdown passes, with just four interceptions. The reason that the Bengals lost is another story. They put too much trust in quarterback Joe Burrow, who attempted about 40 passes. The Bengals were given a relief from wide receiver Tee Higgins, after he threw a 54 yard pass that landed them with their only touchdown. In the first quarter, the Bengals were unable to recover a fumble, which led the Steelers to their first touchdown.

The history of the Bengals/Steelers rivalry is constant, especially since they have played each other two times a year since they became division rivals in 1970. Although the rivalry isn’t as historic as the Bengals and Browns or the Steelers and Ravens, the Bengals and Steelers rivalry is considered the bitterest rivalry in the NFL. The Bengals have also met the Steelers more than any other team. In 2009, the rivalry was raised to new heights when the Bengals were division champions over the Steelers, and the rest of the entire division. Pittsburgh won the game, 36-10, over the Bengals. This keeps the Steelers as first in the division, and undefeated, while the Bengals remain in last with their pitiful record of 2-6-1.
