Syrena Clymer, Freshman

For the first time, every China's space station announced they are landing a vehicle on the far side of the moon. According to The New York Times, the rover was launched last month on December 8th and reached the far side 22 days later at 10:26 a.m. Because the moon prohibits direct contact with the rover a satellite was also launched to relay the singles from the rover back to the space station; they later received the very first image of the far side of the moon. The far side of is the oldest, and deepest part of the moon which is very important for new exploration into the history, and evolution of the moon; new discoveries of the rich minerals which possibly surround the land are also expected.

The China national space administration said the mission “has opened a new chapter in humanity’s exploration of the moon” on an announcement on the website.

China is catching up to the U.S. and could soon challenge in fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and more. Now, plans for a third fully functioning space station to be operated to hopefully have a lunar base by 2022.
