Christian School Expels Teen for her Rainbow Shirt and Cake

Jordan Ramos, Freshman

A private school in Kentucky expels a 15 year old female student for wearing a rainbow sweater and taking pictures of her and her rainbow cake on her birthday. The Christian school, Whitefield Academy, sent an email to the girl’s mother informing her that the pictures were deemed as “lifestyle violations” as homosexuality is considered a sin at that school. Apparently this was enough for the school to dismiss her as a student and expel her from the school. While rainbows can have many meanings — in addition to being a meteorological phenomenon — they’ve served as a universal symbol of gay pride and acceptance since the late 1970s. Because of this, the school informed the student’s mother that the rainbows could make students uncomfortable with her “perceived sexuality”. In addition, they gave the girl a book called “Gay Girl Good God” written by an ex-gay author, teaching about the “sins” of homosexuality. The student was transferred to a public school where she is adapting to well.
