DIY Holiday Gifts

Chesney Mosher, Freshman

During the holiday season, exciting gifts can rise in price. A great way to save money is to make gifts yourself, which also gives each gift sentimental value. With supplies and a creative mind, the possibilities are endless.

One very thoughtful yet easy gift to make is a personalized candle. The supplies you'll need are a stove, pot, candle melts, wick, jar, pictures, and small decorations. Start by putting a pot of water on low heat and adding a glass jar to the center of it. Then add the candle melts into the jar and wait for them to melt. While they are melting, start making your candle jar. Grab a glass jar and any pictures or small decorations you want to put in them. Modge podge the pictures or decorations and let dry. After your jar is dry, glue the wick to the bottom of the jar and then add the melted candle melts. Make sure to keep it on a flat surface to let it harden.

Though some people prefer materialistic gifts, this one would be perfect for people that like more traditional or gifts from scratch. The supplies you'll need to make a holiday cookie jar would be a large jar, cookie mix (or a homemade recipe), and festive ribbons/decor. Start off by making an assortment of cookies, preferable the types the gift receiver likes. While the cookies are baking, decorate your jar with a ribbon, sparkles, a quote, or stickers. Once your cookies are baked and cooled, stack them in the jar in a circular row.

Even though receiving a plant as a gift may seem dull, it isn't when it's decorated! A decorated holiday plant is a perfect gift for someone who loves plants and decor. The supplies you would need would be a holiday plant such as a holly plant, a pot, and ornaments. You first want to start off by transferring your plant into your holiday-themed pot (make sure you do this correctly so the plant does not die). After the plant is potted, hang ornaments on it and any other Christmas tree decor that you would like.

If you have a friend or family member who loves to snuggle up with a warm blanket, a no sew-blanket might be just right for them. For a no-sew blanket, you'll need fabric, scissors, and time. There are plenty of in-depth tutorials on YouTube to follow. The blanket is very customizable, enabling you to choose different fabrics based on the personality or taste of the receiver. The overall project is very simple, it's just very time-consuming.

A very cheap gift idea is decorative mugs. You can paint, marbleize, bedazzle or add pictures to them. This is a great present that is very customizable. All you would need would be a mug and whatever you decide to decorate it with. Once your mug is done, you can add candy, a plant, or anything else to finish off the mug.
