Government Shutdown Intensifies

Rachel Gallagher, Senior

As we head into the third week of government shutdown, Trump is still holding out until the construction of the border wall is approved. Donald Trump is in the process of bypassing Congress through declaring a national emergency. As many people were asking questions on Sunday, Trump states, “We’re looking at a national emergency because we have a national emergency -- just read the papers.” However, Democrats disagree with this statement completely. One democrat, Whip Dick Durbin, says, “There is no requirement that this government be shut down while we deliberate the future of any barrier, whether it’s a fence or a wall.”

Politicians came to the conclusion that Trump is the first President to shut down his own government. The resolution of the government shutdown does not seem to be resolving any time soon, since the opposing parties can not come to an agreement on the wall. While they continue to argue they are selfishly putting thousands of government workers out of work. Trump says, “This shutdown could end tomorrow, and it could also go on for a long time,” this proves the duration of this shutdown is undeclared and unpredictable.
