Tsunekazu Takeda, the International Olympic Committee’s marketing chair, is currently under fire for suspicions of corruption connected to the 2020 Olympics. Tokyo was announced as the host of the 2020 Olympics. However, there is a belief that corruption influenced the results. Every two years, cities bid around the world to the International Olympic Commission (IOC) in hopes of hosting the Olympics. However, it is not a walk through the park for a city to become a “Candidate City” in the IOC. To put into perspective, the fee for hosting the 2012 Olympics was $150,000 U.S. and there is no doubt that the application fee is pricey for cities.
Fox News reports that Takeda was placed under investigation on December 10th for being suspected of authorizing payments for bribes. There were two payments worth a total of two million dollars made around the time of Tokyo’s selection in the Olympics. The IOC ethics commission is meeting on Friday to discuss Takeda’s predicament and whether he will be potentially suspended from his Olympic duty. Takeda continues to deny the allegations and insists he did not pay any bribes.
