On May 30, 2019, a couple, Melania and Chris Geymonat, were attacked by four teenage boys. The aftermath left both Melania and Chris covered in blood. Melania and Chris are unsure what provoked the attack on the top seats of the London double-decker bus. Originally, the boys started the attack by harassing the couple. According to CNN, Melanie reports them “demanding that we kissed so they could enjoy watching, calling us 'lesbians' and describing sexual positions”. Melanie resorted to making jokes to try to defuse the situation, but the boys did not give up and, reportedly, “kept on harassing us, throwing us coins and becoming more enthusiastic about it”.
The attack then turned violent as the boys took Melanie Geymonat’s partner, Chris, into a semi-formed circle and began beating her. During the attack, the bus had stopped and the police began to arrive. Melanie was left with a shirt covered in blood and a broken nose. Before the boys left, they took Melanie and Chris’ purses. The charges against the group is now suspicion of robbery and causing grievous bodily harm. The Metropolitan Police has arrested four males, aged between 15 and 18, with a continuous search for any other members of the harmful group. Many, including London’s mayor, have spoken out against the “disgusting attack”: “hate crimes against the LGBT+ community will not be tolerated in London”. Melanie has reported feeling angry about the entire situation, but she is “thankful it didn't get worse”. She now awaits her small procedure for her broken nose in the upcoming week.
