Today, January 15th, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Martin Luther King Jr. is most known for his efforts towards the civil rights movement during the 50s and into the 60s. He created a snowball effect for all people of color in order to fight segregation and move America into modern times. He believed in a dream, a dream that all people would get along despite what race they are. In 1954 he became a minister, spreading his dream through the church along with God’s word. Martin’s strategy of protesting was peaceful, as he believed if they would result to violence they would be no better than their oppressors. He led a 250,000 person march in Washington in order to protest segregation. For his efforts he won the Nobel Peace prize at the age of 35, becoming the youngest man to win this award. On the third Monday of January, his efforts and life are celebrated across the country. It is a day of community service and respected by having no school. Look into what you can do in your community to celebrate the work of this great man.
