On students first day back from winter break in Seattle schools, nearly 800 students were not allowed to attend school due to not having a measles vaccine. This decision comes after the Washington legislature passed a law stating that personal opinions cannot excuse students from receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines. There was a recorded 7,000 unvaccinated students out of a total of 54,000 students in Seattle schools. Opportunities were held for students to receive these vaccinations and letters were sent out to the families of unvaccinated children stating that if a child was not vaccinated by January 8th that they could not attend school. Students that did show up to school without certification of their vaccination were instructed to sit in a waiting for their parents to come pick them up, other than students with a medical or religious exemption signed by a health professional. These measures are being taken due to having 1,282 recorded cases of measles in the United States during 2019, this being the highest recorded amount of measles cases since 1992. Around the world there was a recorded 400,000 measles cases in 2019.📷
