During a case on age discrimination, the phrase “Ok Boomer” made it’s first appearence in the Supreme Court.
Having originated on the popular media platform “TikTok” as a joke made by the younger generations, the phrase “Ok Boomer” has taken the internet by storm. Generation Z and Millenials alike have been using the phrase to poke fun at some of the outdated ideals of the Baby Boomer generation, as well as in response to being mocked by the “Boomers”.📷
Within days, this lighthearted way to joke about the older generation turned sour. Many Baby Boomers began to claim the phrase “Ok Boomer” was a derogatory slur towards them, with some claiming it to be just as bad as many racial slurs.
On January 15th, the Supreme Court saw a case on age discrimination, and whether or not a young hiring employee saying “Ok Boomer” to an older prospective employee could allow for the filing of a discrimination claim. Laughter broke out in the room, as many couldn’t believe that this term had made it into such a professional setting.
After disputes between Chief Justice John Roberts and Lawyer Roman Martinez, it was determined that, depending on the situation, this could very much be a case of age discrimination. If this statement was used as a way of purposefully being unflattering towards a potential employee, and was taken into consideration when hiring, it could very much be considered agge discrimination.
