Remembering the 1996 Blizzard

Syrena Clymer, Freshman

Around this time, January 6-8, in 1996 there was a massive blizzard; according to The Washington Post, the storm brought 12-15 inches of snow in the Washington area. This was Dulles airport and Baltimore´s second biggest snow storm with 24.6 and 26.6 inches. Philadelphia was the city hit the hardest which received its biggest snowfall ever of 31-48 inches. Schools and businesses were mostly closed the following week when even more snow still falling.

Even after the snow had stopped falling, the damage it would cause did not. The following days were very hot with temperatures of over 60 degrees which melted most of the snow within a few days. This caused major flooding and dangerous road conditions, especially in cities. The storm had caused more than 150 deaths, and an estimated $3 billion dollars in damage. Hopefully a blizzard like this will never occur again but it's important to be prepared for a situation like this.
