Today is celebrated as the birthday of one of the world's greatest minds in theoretical physics- Stephen Hawking. Stephen Wiliam Hawking was born January 8th, 1942 in Oxford, England to Frank and Isobel Eileen Hawking. Hawking excelled in the sciences in his early life and went on to attend The University of Oxford at age 17 and Trinity Hall Cambridge at 20-years-old. At 21, Hawking was diagnosed with motor neuron disease,Lou Gehrig's Disease, also referred to as ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Only given two years to live, this did not stop Hawking as he went on to make great advances in theoretical physics and cosmology. He became a Lucasian Professor at Cambridge, founded the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge, worked on the theory of black holes, gravitational singularity theorem, the theory of general relativity, and quantum mechanics. He became an author when he wrote a book about his life called A Brief History of Time, which quickly became an international best seller. This became a movie adaptation in 1991 and 2015. He worked until his death on March 14, 2018 at age 76 in Cambridge, England.📷
