No matter the time nor day, fire companies respond to millions of fire calls each year, saving millions of lives each year and teaching others how to prevent these deadly disasters.

Local fire companies, like Springtown Fire Company, rely on volunteers. Many host events and fundraisers to help pay for new equipment and tools. Before Covid, Springtown Fire Company would host monthly breakfasts as a source of income. Now with the pandemic, they have had to cancel these events.

These crews fought raging battles against the wildfires that burnt across both California and Australia for months last year. Some of these fires were created due to a lack of care by people. Others were due to gender reveal parties that went horribly wrong. Additionally, others were caused by man-made fires that were not put out properly or got out of control. These fires destroyed hundreds of houses, arches of forests, and healthy ecosystems.

The most common sources of fires within homes are cooking equipment, heating, smoking in bedrooms, and electrical equipment. Make sure that smoke detectors are fully functional, replace batteries every 10 months and replace the alarms themselves every 10 years to help be prepared against a potential fire.

Children are curious about fire, so make sure to keep objects out of their reach. Also, teach them the dangers of fire and how to protect themselves and others from it. “Stop, drop, cover, and roll” drills are important to teach children, alongside teaching them 911 and other important emergency numbers. It’s very important to create an emergency escape plan in case of a fire. Making sure your child(ren) understands the safest way to exit a burning building and where they should meet once safely outside.

Everyone can help prevent fires by knowing and adhering to standard safety guidelines. Keeping an eye on open flames is key. Make sure to keep BBQ grills at least 10 feet away from houses to avoid fire. Make sure to never disable smoke or CO detectors. These devices and procedures may seem simple, but save thousands of lives by warning about a possible fire.
