The University of Lyon was alarmed by a strong explosion on the roof of the building Thursday morning in Lyon, France. According to NBC News, a fire hit a science library that was undergoing repairs at the campus. French officials reported that three people have died. Images have shown up on social media, revealing huge plumes of smoke and a flickering fire rising above the building.
The area was evacuated as regional fire service assure that the blaze was under control soon afterward. The university said multiple explosions were heard and that the accident was caused after a gas bottle exploded. The town of Villeurbanne did not elaborate, tweeting that the blast was “accidental”. The town and the university insist the there were no risks of chemical leaks.
