World Mental Health Day

Allie Wenskoski, Junior

Saturday, October 10 was World Mental Health Day. This did not just mark another National Day, but a chance to spread the word about mental health and to realize that everyone’s mental well-being is just as important as their physical well-being. Though World Mental Health Day is in the midst of a pandemic this year, that is another reason why increased investment of mental health is so important. The theme set for this year’s World Mental Health Day is “mental health for all”.

What is mental health? Another name for this is our emotional health. When someone is in good mental health, they can make the most of their potential, cope with life, and have an important role with their family relationships and friendships. Being in bad mental health doesn’t just mean having a mental health problem. Being aware of your own mental health is important as well as making sure the people around you additionally have good mental health.

Every year, World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 and is a good chance to talk about your own mental health along with listening to mental health professionals and being aware of the work they do every day. The goal of World Mental Health Day is to increase awareness of mental health and to start action for supporting mental health.

How can you support World Mental Health Day? It’s simple! Wear yellow to show your support all weekend. Also, use #HelloYellow to become a part of the conversation or donate to one of the many organizations supporting mental health. These include the World Health Organization, Yellow Minds, and the Mental Health Foundation. Displaying green ribbons is another way to spread awareness all year long.
