The National Honor Society annually assists the three elementary schools with gingerbread house building. Students who are a part of NHS sign up for one or more of the three schools to go to and help out the elementary students. Tinicum, Durham, and Springfield’s gingerbread house buildings are held during the month of December, just on three separate days. The NHS members are able to sign up for the school they would like to assist at and the day that works best for them. The different jobs the NHS members do to help are set up the tables, clean up afterwards, and also donate gingerbread house materials.
The children participating in the making of these gingerbread houses always have an enjoyable, fun time because it is always a good way to get into the holiday spirit. Even the NHS members who aid the students have an entertaining time watching and helping. However, each member of the NHS who participated in this event has had a different experience. Karisa Smith, who is a senior member of NHS, said, “It was a very fun-filled activity and one of favorite memories was when a little boy chugged a bag of icing, which then he got yelled at by a teacher.” Another member of NHS, Kenzie Connolly, who is a junior, said, “It was a good experience and would most definitely do it again.” Others students had said similar things regarding their opinions in helping the little children build these festive gingerbread houses. The teachers at each of the elementary schools also look forward to this activity each year because they enjoy watching the kids get creative and build the gingerbread houses in so many of their own gifted ways. NHS members do such a tremendous job each year in assisting the teachers/ administrators prepare and make this event happen successfully. A huge thanks to all of the NHS members who donate and assist in the making of this event.
